Ojikajima | Island Life
Nestled in the tranquil Goto Archipelago of Nagasaki, Ojika Island can be reached in 90 minutes by a high speed ferry from Sasebo, or on an overnight ferry from Fukuoka. This small island became the setting for a personal documentary project exploring daily life on the island. Over several months, I worked closely with the owner of a traditional ryokan, capturing not only the essence of the inn but also the day-to-day life of the close-knit island community.
I began by assisting the owner in updating images of his ryokan, making it look as inviting as possible. Beyond the inn, I spent time documenting the island itself, from the small harbour that could be seen from the windows, to the forest paths and local community events. I wanted to share a glimpse into the life of the island, something that tourists to Japan often don't see when heading only to the major cities. Many of these images were used for both the ryokan's marketing, and for local tourism articles.
